On April 15th of 1912, tragedy struck. The RMS Titanic, also known as the unsinkable ship, had sunk in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on the fifth day of its maiden voyage (Titanic). The Titanic was named after its large size and was considered to be humongous and gigantic. The ship was a newer idea and "would forsake speed for the increased safety and comfort that would come with a significant increase in scale" as said in the article RMS Titanic facts and history. The Titanic took three years to build and left for its maiden voyage on April 10th of 1912.
"The largest passenger steamship ever built, Titanic created quite a stir when it departed for its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912," (Titanic). Crowds gathered along the docks when the Titanic left, as many waved goodbye to their loved ones and strangers, too. Captain Edward J. Smith was a well known reliable captain that was selected to steer the Titanic ( Edward J. Smith). It was Captain Smith that supposedly said the words "full astern" to tell the crew to get the ship moving at full speed. Despite the fact that it was night time and the crew didn't have sight of the still freezing ocean, the orders were followed.
The name Titanic was indeed represented by the ship itself, "She was 882 feet 9 inches in length and 92 feet in breadth. Her gross tonnage was 46,328 tons. Three propellers were driven by two four-cylinder, triple-expansion, inverted reciprocating steam engines and one low-pressure Parsons turbine. Steam was provided by 25 double-ended and 4 single-ended Scotch-type boilers fired by 159 coal burning furnaces that gave her a theoretical top speed of 23 knots,” as said in the article RMS Titanic facts and history. It seemed the ship was big enough to withstand anything, and it was said that even God could not sink it. However, the simple mistake made by the captain and crew proved differently.
Even though it was April, the ocean was still extremely cold and the glaciers had not completely melted yet. Shortly after 11 PM on April 14th, an iceberg was spotted directly in front of the ship. The ship was steered away from the iceberg, but despite the efforts, the ship hit the iceberg scattering ice onto the deck and side of the ship was scraped underwater (Titanic). There were not enough lifeboats on deck for all the passengers as they scrambled to live, and women and children were put on the few lifeboats first. The ship was completely underwater at 2:20 AM on April 15th, followed by 1500 people that drowned or died from hypothermia (Titanic).
"In the decades since her demise, Titanic has inspired countless books and several notable films while continuing to make headlines, particularly since the 1985 discovery of her resting place off the coast of Newfoundland. Meanwhile, her story has entered the public consciousness as a powerful cautionary tale about the perils of human hubris," (Titanic). The Titanic was a true tragedy that changed many people's lives. Although it was over 100 years ago, the memory still stands with us today through movies, books, the internet, and TV shows and documentaries. The lives lost will be remembered and cherished in the future and will cause the world to forever be cautious and careful so that a tragedy such as the Titanic will never repeat itself.
